While there will never (maybe) be a substitute for an actual in person concert, there may be a way to capture the experience from a different perspective. Recently Sir Elton John has announced his retirement. Unlike traditional performers he has decided to use virtual reality as his platform for his grand finale in addition to a 3 year tour. This concept may be the gateway for many digital performances to come allowing those who are unable to attend to experience this from an arguably better perspective.
What does this mean for the future? Well if a musical legend such as Sir Elton John is using virtual reality in this manner then it wouldn’t be a far stretch to say that others will follow suite and do something similar. I’ve often said that the movie industry is going to undergo massive changes within the next few years in terms of delivering media. One of these changes may be to allow certain content to be streamed via virtual reality headsets such as the promo below.
For Elton and many other artists virtual reality is a powerful medium that can be used to preserve their work.
The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour will begin this September starting in the US.
