A home theater PC is a great way to stream and record media. In this build guide I will show the parts to put together a home theater PC that will be adequate enough to accommodate media playback and mild gaming.
AMD A6-6400k ~ $52
Because there will be no discrete graphics card for this build, we decided to select a processor that could handle high definition video playback and mid to high resolution gaming. With our budget being under $400 the AMD A6 was an obvious choice.
GIGABYTE GA-F2A78M-D3H ~ $60
The case we selected only allowed for a micro atx motherboard. Unfortunately choices are limited for this socket motherboard. It was absolutely necessary that we have the option for HDMI out since this build is meant for the living room after all. For this purpose our preference was the Gigabyte GA-F2A78M-D3H.
Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB ~ $26
The reason we chose this ram was simply because of its low profile and price point. There was no need for more than 4GBs of ram in this build because it is only meant for video streaming and light gaming.
Rosewill Stallion Series 400 Watt ~ $40
A 400 watt power supply should be more than enough for our needs. This power supply should be more than adequate since this is only a htpc and there will be no need for future expansion.
Seagate Barracuda 1TB Hard Drive ~ $53
We chose the Seagate barracuda 1TB because we needed a hard drive that was big enough to save all of our media but also met our price range.
SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B ~ $80
Finally for our case we chose the Silverstone Steel ML04B because of its simplistic compact look.
– AMD A6-6400k ~ $52
– GIGABYTE GA-F2A78M-D3H ~ $60
– Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB ~ $26
– Rosewill Stallion Series 400 Watt ~ $40
– Seagate Barracuda 1TB Hard Drive ~ $53
– SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum / Steel ML04B ~ $80
Total ~ $311
LG Black 12X BD-ROM ~ $45
We didn’t include this in the core parts list because fewer and fewer people are using optical disk to watch their media. However, for those of you who wish to include it, we would recommend this one.
This PC will serve as a great device for anyone who streams media and enjoys mild gaming. Keep in mind that there is no dedicated GPU for this build so high quality gaming is not guaranteed.
